The music of Doug Wood
combines the subleties of folk and jazz music with the intensity of acoustic
rock.
Background
Originally born and raised in Denver, CO Doug started playing electric guitar
at age 12. At age 16 he played for his High School jazz band in Huron, Ohio.
He was given his Guild F-212 12-string acoustic guitar as a gift from his
brothers and his life soon became an acoustic adventure. With his Guild 12-string
in hand he went on to play with his college jazz band at John Carroll University
in Cleveland. The experience playing for jazz bands, mixed with the influence
from musical acts like Yes, Steve Tibbetts, Rush, and Leo Kottke, propelled
Doug to think beyond the confines of the typical folk chords, and started
him on a journey of writing his own instrumental compositions.
After graduating college in 1989, Doug was introduced (thanks alot Brien Farley)
to the phenominal bass player Darren Frate. Doug and Darren started the instrumental
folk/rock/jazz fusion group WATTS GNU, which within 3 years started to get
some great national attention. From 1991 to 1997 you could see them both performing
in the streets and subways of Boston, or at various concert venues and colleges
along the East Coast and throughout the midwest. WATTS GNU was a finalist
in the Boston "Acoustic Underground" Competition and a finalist
in the SPIN MAGAZINE/PIZZA HUT "New Sounds for Original Music" Competition
in 1992. Watts Gnu released their only CD Kindred Spirit in 1994. The CD received
decent airplay on NPR and Commercial jazz stations across the country.

DOUG WOOD BIO:
Since his days of performing in the Boston subways in the early 1990s,
Doug Wood has earned the status as one of the premier independent acoustic
performers in the country. Doug was voted by campuses nationwide as the "Best
Instrumentalist" (CampusAwards.com) and "2005 Best Music Performance"
finalist (Campus Activities Magazine). Doug was most recently nominated for
"2007 BEST GUITARIST" by the Cleveland Free Times, and 2008 "Best
Of" in the Acoustic Category by Colorado Public Radio (KUNC).
Dougs instrumental music can shift from a sweet solo fingerstyle guitar
piece to a composition looping energetic world rhythms with various percussion
instruments. He connects well with his audience, whether its through
his musicianship, tales of the road, or simply his wry sense of humor.
Doug has appeared live on National Public Radio shows Echoes and
River City Folk, Public Television's arts program "Applause,"
and his CDs have been featured on over 700 stations nationwide. Currently
Doug is touring in support of his new CD "DREAMCATCHER" which features
renowned musicians Dale Peters (from the James Gang), Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon's
& Sting's percussionist), Tracy Silverman (Windham Hill violinist),
and long time bass phenom Darren Frate (from Watts Gnu).
